The Concept of Employee Engagement

Whatever the case may be, the whole concept just revolves around two things. If the terms are taken separately, a literal meaning could be formed. An employee is a person working under a higher-positioned officer, while engagement simply means being involved in a transaction. Putting the two together, it could mean that employee engagement is about a person working under a higher-positioned officer being involved in a transaction. The combination of the meanings of the two words formed a literal meaning. That meaning is simple enough to understand word for word, but is still difficult to comprehend if taken as a whole.

blockThere is a sub field in Psychology, Industrial and Organizational Psychology, that deals with certain factors that affect employee engagement. From that statement alone, it can be deduced that the term can be broken down into separate factors. It means that it could just be a whole that can be divided into parts, or it could be taken as a process. Furthermore, it could mean that the term could also refer to something that can be done with just two people, or something that requires a lot of people to take place.

Experts who try to define the term as a whole also encounter difficulty, and often arrive at equally ambiguous terms. Researchers have yet to come up with a single definition of the term. Different books still fail to come up with a single concrete conceptualization about the term. Reference books still lack the appropriate material to define what the aforementioned term means. Even people who work often have difficulties in explaining what the term means.

Based from all of those statements, one thing can be deduced: it is very difficult to define the term. Hence, since defining it is hard, why not just stop defining, and just understand the term? This is what authors are trying to do nowadays. They have stopped trying to make words explain other words. Rather, those authors are now trying to define words using other tactics like relating it to people’s experiences or by using analogy.

Current conceptualizations about employee engagement involve words like transactions, interactions, interpersonal communication, group dynamics, people skills, verbal and non-verbal communication, dichotomies, social factors, and other words. These words all help in explaining the central term. Basically, these words help in defining the term, but they are not enough. Therefore, the common conceptualization of the term, as found in educational books, is the interplay of all the definitions.

engagementIt could simply be what is seen to be as the totality of what the employees are doing while they are in their offices. This seems to be a general statement, but this seems to be the most appropriate statement that applies to the term. Its concept may be hard to define, but people have a lot less difficulty describing what employees do while in their offices. Therefore, one thing is for certain: the whole concept of employee engagement is hard to define, but easy to understand.
